Dimensions Variable
The Box, Pippy Houldsworth, London
23 February - 15 March 2012
opening 22 February 2012 - 6pm
www.houldsworth.co.uk
‘Dimensions variable is a term often referring to a piece of art, to describe when the size of the work is
depending on the context it is being exhibited in. There are also other affiliations linking the term to a
feeling of an equivocal ‘anything goes’ - depending solely upon you or limited by your imagination only.
Here one
is inevitably reminded to corporate messages of sales promotion or motivational tag lines from
personal coaching lessons.
In his recent installation Dornbusch places a paper sheet inside a white cube, the paper only being held
in position by its own gravity through bending it into the given space. The white cube is part of the curated
project series The Box, a 40x40cm illuminated space mounted inside a black corridor at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery.
Hardly visible from a distance and legible only by closer approach, the words The fleeting scent in the very moment
between opening the lid and just before removing the display protection sheet from a MacBook Air purchased a few
seconds ago are printed in Apple’s very own corporate font onto the white paper. Referring to an olfactive experience
not everyone might be familiar with or have access to, Dimensions Variable addresses the status and conditions of the
exclusive within our society. It also leaves us with an option of imagining the unavailable.’

Ideo Motor
4 April - 10 May 2009
Govett-Brewster Public Art Gallery
New Plymouth, New Zealand
govettbrewster.com
For five weeks, every half an hour recordings of church bells chime from the
window front of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. Over the 24 hour period of the day, the sound installation Ideo Motor replays the sounds of anonymous
church bells taken from the internet onto the street, while the interior of the front
window space remains empty.
Open Window is the site of a series of contemporary art projects featuring a range
of emerging artists that engage with the commercial nature of the shop-front window and the attributes particular to window gazing.
